Ep 012: The #1 Key To The Social Media Game

Sep 03, 2020

We’re here to talk about the #1 key to the social media game and how to show up and serve your people while embracing the authentic you.

When it comes to social media and creating a following, boosting your influence or building a brand it’s important that you show up consistently with your audience and bring value to them in some way.

Many times creating content is difficult because we get hung up on perfection; we try to create the perfect rant on Facebook, best instagram caption or create our next best Youtube video. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the most important part is the value we’re bringing to others.

Often it’s our hunger to create the perfect piece of content that’s crippling to us.

This all stems back around to the saying “done beats perfect”. When you need to be posting constantly on instagram stories and adding value for your audience daily - it can get overwhelming very quickly.

This is a perfect reflection from the previous episode which was all about embracing the real, authentic you. If you can learn to be vulnerable and share your journey with your audience, they can meet you where you’re at and you can bring them on this journey with you.

If you can start to document your journey on social media instead of being the next influencer who has to curate content to make yourself look further ahead or in a different place than you really are, you can start to just be yourself.

When I first started opening up on social media I was in a creation phase where I was struggling to come up with a single post, let alone content to drip over the entire week. It felt paralyzing to come up with content and I didn’t see the big picture, I couldn’t see how everything fit together so I just didn’t post anything, for months. What I did post was so “perfectly” (in my mind) curated that it wasn’t reality. It wasn’t as authentic as it should have been.

Eventually I ended up finding the wonderful Gary Vanderchuck who is a legend when it comes to speaking honestly about work and entrepreneurship and when I heard his advice I started showing up in an entirely new way.

I realized that by spending so much time crafting the perfect piece of content, I wasn’t sharing with my audience what they really wanted to know, the process that led me here and who I’m becoming on my journey.

Once I was able to start documenting my journey the posts became simpler, more meaningful and more valuable to my followers.

That’s where the #1 key to the social media game comes into play.

The secret when it comes to the social media is that you need to document, not create.

Hearing Gary say this gave me a huge “aha” moment and I’ve forever changed how I show up and serve on social media.

You need to talk about your process instead of the advice you think you should be giving people.

Now my posts are congruent, they flow easily and I continue to add value because I help guide people through a process and I no longer have to wonder what my posts are going to be about, because I’m living them daily.

If I’m being honest, I wish I would have started documenting my journey years ago.

You may be thinking, people don’t care what I’m doing, why should I document this? But, that’s where you’re wrong. There’s someone out there who’s exactly where you are or used to be and they’re stuck. They need someone like you to show them the way to get to where they want to go. By documenting your journey you can bring them along for the ride and hopefully be their guide too.

This is true with all of the social media platforms, it doesn’t matter which one you choose to document on, just show up and share your journey and I promise there will be people out there who want to follow what you’re doing!

But, what holds people back from documenting their journey? Many times they’re afraid to start!

This can be due to a fear of opening up about what they’re doing in front of friends or family, worried they will judge them. Or it could be the fear of failure if what they’re doing doesn’t work out the way they had hoped.

There are many things that could hold you back from starting, but the truth is if you wait to start the only regret you’ll have is that you didn’t start sooner.

If you wish you would have started sooner, and use that as a reason to not start right now I have a quote that’s just for you, babe.

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the 2nd best time is today.” - Chinese Proverb

So the #1 key to the social media game is to document, not create and the 2nd key is to start today.

Cheers to showing up with me today and in the next post we’re going to talk about how you can turn your mess into your message to build up your tribe of raving fans.

We talked about documenting your journey on social media today, but the #1 tool I use to help me through this process and to automate my posts and document my journey I use an app called Planoly. because it allows me to schedule instagram posts, stories and add the first comment + hashtags for each post.
