Ep 004: Discovering Your Why

Aug 14, 2020

Today we’re going to uncover your why that will make you unstoppable when it comes to achieving your goals.

Discovering your why is the key that will make you unstoppable when it comes to achieving your goals and feeling a sense of fulfillment in everything that you do.

I’m going to share a very powerful exercise with you guys today that all of my clients have absolutely loved and I can’t wait to share it with you here today!

I want to start by telling you guys a little story.

When I first decided I wanted to start a business I was so excited to just jump all in and learn how to just do the damn thing that I learned all of the tactics, strategies and tech type things that go into running a business.

By doing this, I thought I could just put in the work it would make me successful.

I also thought that by focusing 100% on the business that I would get to that success much faster. Until the burnout kicked in, the struggles of managing time and being my own boss started to get the best of me

… and what I learned was that success doesn’t really mean anything to me – not truly. I mean the word sounded nice, but it wasn’t anything I could apply to my life.

It wasn’t enough to drive me when times got tough and it surely wasn’t enough to keep me motivated when I wanted to give up.

Without understanding what I was doing wrong or why I always just wanted to give up, I would change paths thinking that was the answer. Moving onto the next shiny object.

But, then I learned that what I really needed was to figure out my deeper reasoning for wanting success. What did it truly mean for my family and my life if I became successful?

Once I was able to figure that out, I had a fire burning inside me to see it through, because I knew what was at stake – that’s when I figured out the how to make those dreams come true.

But they had to be done in that order. Figure out my why then figure out the how.

Your why is one of the most important aspects of your life to understand. Because when you can get to your deeper purpose of wanting to do something, you’ll uncover what’s truly meaningful to you, you’ll have the drive to push through any roadblock that may come up trying to prevent you from that future goal.

Stemming off of episode 3 which was all about setting goals that align your focus with your dream life, we have to know why we want to achieve those goals in order to actually put in the work to execute them.

You may be thinking, but Jamie I know I want to start a business because I want to have freedom or the money to take vacations and buy a new house… I see my vision board in front of me, I know I want all of these things in my life.

Okay great, but WHY do you want them?

This is so important to uncover because I’ll tell you at the end of the day, when it feels like nothings working, you had a bad day or life throws you a curve ball – you may be ok just settling for the way things are – unless you can dive deeper into why it’s important to you to keep going.

We just have to get past those surface layers to find the juicy stuff. Your true why for why you want something for your life and others.

What I’ve noticed is that most of the time when you ask someone why they want something, whether big or small, they give you a very surface level answer. For example, if people asked me why I wanted to start a podcast I may say something like:

“To help others reach their goals.” but you guys it’s SO much deeper than that.

Let’s start by talking about your two whys; your personal why and your contribution why.

Your personal why is your reason for wanting something for your life, your family and yourself. Maybe you want time or financial freedom, you want to be able to spend your time in any way you chose without sacrifice.

Your contribution “why” is your reason for wanting something for others, your community, the world, the environment; it’s your reason for wanting to give back and help others. Maybe you want to help women who’ve suffered trauma get their lives back.

Your why is so important because it’s your driving force behind your life and business. Once your why is defined you have a fire that’s going to be the fuel to drive you to reach the people you need to reach and do the things you need to do.

But those examples I just gave you are still, very surface level. So let’s get deeper here and uncover your true why.

I have an exercise called 7 levels deep that I learned from my mentor Dean Graziosi and it’s a wonderful tool that has helped thousands of people. If you have a pen and paper handy I recommend grabbing it to do this exercise with me.

If you don’t have anything to write on feel free to grab the tool from HERE.

7 Levels Deep Exercise

I want you to start by thinking about one of your big life goals. It can be to start a business, move to another state, become successful etc.

I’m going to actually use my personal 7 levels deep as an example for you guys throughout this process, but I’ll also give you guys the chance to fill it out with me as we go.

As the exercise states we’re going to go 7 levels deep. I recommend doing this with someone so they can help you uncover your why. Feel free to go on as long as you want answering each of the questions. Have the person asking you write down the biggest take away from your response.

Start by writing down:

Level 1: What is important to you about _________ (becoming successful)

Jamies Answer: I want to feel fulfilled

Level 2: Why is it important to you to ________ (feel fulfilled)

Jamies Answer: I want to know that I’ve lived my life’s purpose and made a difference

Level 3: why is it important to you to ______ (make a difference)

Jamies Answer: Because I want to know I lived for something greater than myself, I want to set a good example for others and show them that they can too.

Level 4: Why is it important to you to _________ (set a good example and live for something)

Jamies Answer: I want to give people hope for following their dreams and making their live meaningful

Level 5: Why is it important to you to ______ (give people hope and meaning for their lives)

Jamies Answer: Because I’ve known what it’s like to feel lost, stuck and unfulfilled and I never want to feel that way again. I never want to backtrack. I want to give them hope so they can reach their full potential.

Level 6: Why is it important for you to ________ (never backtrack)

Jamies Answer: I know that I’m the creator of my life and that I should always be striving to move forward and better myself along the way, doing this I can achieve my ultimate freedom.

Level 7: Why is it important for you to _______ (have freedom)

Jamies Answer: Because I want to be in absolute control of my life.

Do you guys see the power of this exercise? I went from wanting to become successful to feel fulfilled – which that could mean something different all the time. To no, I want to be in absolute control of my life. I want to help others because I know what it’s like to feel stuck. I have the tools and motivation to move forward without letting anything stop me.

So, how do we tie in our way and use its the power to achieve the goals we’ve established for our lives and businesses?

It’s important to think of your ideal vs non-ideal outcome. Or what if you do vs what if you don’t?

Let’s think about your ideal outcome or what happens if you do. This is you thinking towards your future and what’s going to happen once your goal comes true. What are the benefits of this happening in your life?

My goal is that I post content consistently that will add value to people's lives. What happens when I do this? I feel like I’ll have the capabilities to do something meaningful and make an impact, I’ll be making a difference. I know that if I can prove to myself that I can start and stay on this track that I will have the motivation and encouragement to tackle my next goals.

What does that look like for you? After you achieve your goal?

Now let’s talk about your non-ideal outcome, or what happens if you don’t? Back to my example; if I don’t post content consistently and I don’t add value I won’t run a successful business and I won’t be able to help those I’m called to serve. I would feel unfulfilled, lost and would honestly punish myself for not holding myself accountable.

It’s important to understand both sides of this…

We need to make all our decisions based on ideal outcomes. That’s the secret sauce.

If you can look at your ideal outcome every single day, remember you why and have actionable steps to make it happen, you’re going to start ticking off those goals before you know it.

Freedom Makers, now that you’ve uncovered your why I hope you have a driving force that will help you accomplish anything you put your mind to.

I would love to hear your 7th level, so if you’d like to share it with me please post on my Facebook or send me a message.
