003: How To Set and Execute Goals Like A Boss

Aug 11, 2020

Without setting and achieving goals how do we make sure we’re on track to reach our next level or make sure we’re creating the life we want to be living?

Goal setting is something we’ve been hearing about since childhood, but are we really doing it in a way that not only saves us time, but actually sets ourselves up for success?

Look, there are tons of distractions in the world we live in and it can be SUPER easy to fall off track and lose sight of where we’re trying to go and what we’re trying to achieve.

Setting goals is critically important to building your life, but more importantly, who you become in the process of executing these goals is where you should be focused.

As you just heard, today we’re going to be talking about who you become when executing goals like a boss and how to make sure the goals you’re setting are aligned with the life you’re trying to create for yourself.

Let’s dive in.

In the previous episode we talked about the power of progression and how even the smallest steps forward can prevent you from feeling stuck.

Personally – the number one way I feel progress in my life and business is by ticking my goals off one by one and knowing that they are putting me one step closer to my end goal.

Now, you might be thinking. “Okay, Jamie – easier said than done!” But, bear with me here, because I’m going to share with you a few ways to make sure you’re setting the right goals to get you where you want to go and how to tackle even your biggest goals without feeling overwhelmed.

Then we’re going to get into who you become in the process of achieving the goals you set out to accomplish.

The #1 thing I want you to remember here is to make sure you’re setting the right goals to get you to where you want to go in life.

I’m going to start off by asking you to imagine your life 1 year from today. When you look back you realize you’ve just lived the best year of your life. You feel successful, accomplished and like you’re sitting at the top of the world.

Your relationships are deep and meaningful, your job or business is where you’d like it to be and you’re spending your free time in a way that brings you joy and purpose.

Really imagine this in your mind as if it’s already happened. Feel free to close your eyes and imagine your families faces, your home, business and life. Imagine those feelings you have, realizing that everything you wanted is starting to show up in your life.

Now hold that picture with you for the rest of this episode.

All of the things that you brought to life over that 1 incredible year all started with a thought.

A thought that was then put into an action when you made the decision to make it a goal.

You see, sometimes people go through life letting life happen to them. Wondering why nothing went as planned. But, in reality what’s happening to them is they are never putting those dreams and thoughts into action and life seems to just pass them by.

I want you to know that you have the power to get anything you want in your life, you just have to learn how to turn that thought into action.

Step #1: Setting goals that align with the life you’re trying to create, or your ideal outcome.

So… how do you do this?

Use the trick I just taught you and imagine your life in the future, ask yourself. Is what I’m doing or trying to achieve right now going to put me on the path towards that life? Or am I letting life happen to me?

What you should start to do is make the thoughts that will lead to your ideal outcome your main focus and spend your energy on the activities that will lead to that dream lifestyle.

Now, I don’t want you to hear this next piece of advice and stop listening, but I have to put it out there because I believe this little nugget has helped me make a lot of things happen in my life.

I created a vision board after doing the exercise we just went through. I found photos and elements that aligned with that ideal outcome and put them on a poster board. I hung that poster board by my desk so each day when I sit down to work I’m reminded of why I’m doing what I’m doing and the life I’m creating for myself.

Above that vision board states: WHO DO YOU NEED TO BECOME?

Because the person I am today doesn’t have those things and hasn’t had those experiences, but I need to look through the lens of the person I’m striving to become when I set goals and make decisions in order to make those things happen.

I’m not telling you to go completely change who you are or become a different person.

I’m saying that level 10 you needs to be a big part of your decisions when you’re setting and achieving goals.

Before you set a goal you need to put yourself in the mind of level 10 you. How would they handle this situation and execute this goal? The goal that will get me to my ideal outcome.

Next we want to know how to tackle those big goals and to-dos without feeling overwhelmed. Because as we’ve learned, feeling overwhelmed can lead us to feeling stuck where we stop making progress.

Step #2: Breaking those big goals down into actionable steps.

If you’ve never read the book eat that frog by Brian Tracy I highly recommend you check it out.

Throughout the book, Brian uses the visualization of having a big, ugly, juicy frog that you have to eat (or a big huge massive task you have to accomplish) and how you must break it down into bite-sized pieces in order to execute it.

How you should start by eating the ugliest, nastiest frog first, or the biggest, baddest task first. The one that you’re most likely to put off.

What I encourage you to do is think about the 1 goal or task you’ve thought of that would lead you to your ideal lifestyle you pictured before, but you haven’t done for some reason.

Maybe the timing hasn’t been right or you didn’t have the resources or the money to get started.

Put the outcome of what accomplishing that goal would give you on your vision board or somewhere you’ll see it frequently. You need a constant reminder of why you’re working towards this goal.

Now think of the things you need to do to start making this goal happen.

I’ll give you an example:

When I knew I wanted to start a podcast – that was the big frog. On it’s own it’s just a goal or a dream, but it had no action steps for me to take, therefore it wasn’t going to just happen unless I made the decision to break it down into actionable steps I could start to take.

So what I did was I thought of the things I would need to do in order to get started on the podcast.

Think of my audience and who I was going to serve, think of the value I could give them and how I could offer them value, come up with a name, take a podcasting course, buy the equipment, learn the software, film my first episode.

I knew that by breaking the big task up into smaller tasks I would be able to check them off one by one. Within each of these smaller tasks came more things to learn, but I used time blocking in order to make sure I did each task fully before moving on to the next.

Before I knew it I had recorded my first episode and I was doing it.

Talk about a feeling of accomplishment!!

But, if I had just left it on my vision board as “start a podcast” you would have got the deer in a headlights look outta me with no plan in sight as to how to achieve it.

So break that big frog up into bite size pieces and execute them in the order of importance or complexity.

Now, I want to re-emphasize these goals can be big or small. You can set a goal as simple as organizing your living room this Saturday or something as big as planning a family backpacking trip through New Zealand over the summer.

All goals should be visualized then broken down into chunks that you can take action on.

This will lead to progress and progress equals happiness because you know you’re one step closer to your goals.

Now I want to talk about who you become in the process of achieving the goals you set out to accomplish.

As your board puts your dreams into a vision that you see often, you know the life you’re trying to create and that level 10 you needs to show up and execute to get you there.

How would it feel to have one thing from your vision board happen in your life? What if just one thing could happen. How would that make you feel?

Maybe it’s checking off a bucket list item, taking a trip or starting a blog, maybe it’s running a marathon or learning another language.

Can you imagine how ready you would be to tackle the next thing after realizing that you can do something if you put your mind to it?

But, I want you to go deeper and thing of what would happen if one day when you looked at your board and realized that everything you had put on that board is happening actively in your life right now?

When you realize that the life you had envisioned one year ago really did come true because YOU took the action that you needed to take to get you there and you didn’t get off track.

Then all of the sudden these goals and dreams that seemed so out of reach have happened in your life because you thought about them, made them happen and can live them today.

Imagine the massive goals you’ll set for yourself next after seeing what you just accomplished.

I have to tell you guys that the goals I set for myself are ticking themselves off one by one as my dream life is starting to unfold in front of my eyes.

I’m not going to tell you it didn’t work hard. I’ve worked like crazy to make sure I stay on track towards the life and lifestyle I want to live.

But, I’ll tell you that if it wasn’t for visualization and a clear direction of where I wanted to go and why I wanted to go there, life would have happened to me and I may just be wondering why things hadn’t gone how I had thought they would.

It’s because I turned those thoughts into goals and made the decision to execute them that life has somehow manifested itself into one that I’ve created.

I believe life happens for us, not to us, but that we have the power to achieve anything we put our minds to, as long as we’ve pointed them in the right direction.

I challenge you today to create a vision board – whether you grab magazines and tear out the pages or you find photos online and create a new background for your desktop, either way.

Turn those thoughts into something tangible that you can look at each day so you’re reminded of the path your on and you know exactly where it is you’re going.
