002: Going From Stuck, To Unstuck

Aug 09, 2020

I want to kick this podcast off with an episode dedicated to one of the most crippling feelings any entrepreneur, mom or person can go through and that’s the feeling of being stuck.

There was no doubt in my mind when it came to choosing the content for this first episode that this needed to be the topic.

I was stuck for what felt like forever and honestly if I hadn’t figured out a way to be un-stuck, I wouldn’t be sitting here sharing this episode with you and I’d probably still be in complete frustration trying to figure out why I wasn’t making any progress. Feeling like you’re making progress in anything you do will prevent you from feeling stuck.

So if you’re feeling stuck it’s safe to say you feel like you’re not making progress…

Now, being stuck can mean something different for each and every one of us depending on where we are in our lives and businesses, but just know wherever you are, you’re not alone.

Maybe right now you’re feeling stuck at a job that isn’t fulfilling to you, repeating the same stuff over and over, waiting for “some day” when you can truly follow you heart. It’s hard to want to keep going down that path when it doesn’t feel like you’re working every day towards your true calling or purpose. You may not feel like you’re making progress towards that life you’ve envisioned for yourself.

Or maybe you’re just starting your own business and you’re not sure what direction you want to go. You feel like you’re at a crossroads of decisions and you’re just plain stuck.

I’ll start by saying that no matter how stuck you feel like you are, there’s always a way out and that once you reach that other side the feeling of progression is pure bliss.

The key here is finding clarity.

Clarity on what you see yourself doing with your life for the greater good.

I want to encourage you to strive for living a meaningful life. When your short-term actions align with our long-term values and beliefs the by-product is happiness!

Honestly, at the end of the day, that’s what we all want, right? To be happy in the most pure, simple form?

The one thing that keeps me going and progressing forward is knowing that I can make a difference in someone’s life. If you can add value to someone’s life or the community, then it will help you feel good about what you’re doing – that brings me happiness.

So how do you find clarity?

I want to tell you a little story about how I got stuck in the first place, and what happened after that.

I’ve always been extremely independent, even as a little girl I wanted to do everything on my own. This led me down a slippery slope and I would always be chasing after my next idea, the thought of just choosing one thing to focus on honestly scared me to death. I wanted to do and be everything and solve every problem that I could.

Fast forward to my entrepreneurial years and this meant I was doing nothing to my highest ability. My focus was spread so thin on all of these shiny objects that I never really did anything well because I was all over the place.

I would approach friends and family with awesome business ideas, but fail to follow through with any of them. Does this sound familiar to you?! (if so, you’ve got a case of the shiny object syndrome!)

and when you aren’t doing something well it’s really hard to feel progress.

This would always wind up putting me right back to where I started, stuck and wondering why nothing was working. Feeling like I could never accomplish anything or do anything right.

I thought the problem was that I just hadn’t found my passion yet, so I kept searching and searching hoping that someday what I was looking for would just fall from the sky and land in my lap.

I wanted an unmistakable sign that said; “this is what you need to be doing with your life and this is where you should keep focused”.

But, then I learned that the problem wasn’t that I hadn’t found my passion, I knew all along what I wanted to do and why I wanted to do it. Yet, I let myself get distracted by all of these other things that kept pulling me off my true path.

“You have to be very clear on what you want from life and what direction you want to go. You have to point your boat in the right direction. Then, and only then, can you figure out how to get there with laser-like focus.”

Think about it, if you’re on a boat and you want to come to visit me on the Hawaiian islands, you have to know which way to point it in order to focus on getting there. If you just jump on the boat and hope for the best you’re taking a shot in the dark…

After you know where you want to go, you can find the direction and focus on getting there.

The thing that held me back the most was knowing the big thing I wanted to accomplish, but not breaking up the tasks to get there into actionable steps that I could execute on.

Therefore I felt no progress and was left feeling stuck.

So that’s exactly what I decided to do, figure out the stepping stones I needed to take before I could reach my ultimate goal. I did this by hiring coaches and mentors, I took courses that were created by people doing what it was I wanted to do at the highest level. By doing this, I had them show me the way and how to piece everything together, instead of trying to go down the path on my own.

I stopped doing anything that didn’t align with that goal or I spent less of my energy doing them.

I decided to choose one thing to start with and I didn’t let that big idea paralyze me, because I knew that I could always pivot later if I needed to, I then broke it up into smaller actionable steps that would put me one step closer to that end goal.

Once I started to feel progress, I was on a roll. The power of progression is remarkable and you will no longer feel stuck.

The truth is you have to find clarity to pick one thing to truly focus on and once you do you can give it 100% of you.

But I want to encourage you that even if you give something your all and you fail, get back up and do it again. Fail 100 times if it means you’ll be successful once.

There’s a quote I love from Thomas Edison, he states; “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

Freedom Makers, this is so true in life and if you’re feeling stuck, don’t give up. The truth is the people who have seen success have gone through similar times, but they got very clear on their vision, found their focus, and executed to their best ability, even when no one was watching.

Stay tuned because in episode 003 we’re going to be talking about goal setting and how setting goals directly relate to progress and not feeling stuck.
