4 Steps To Tackling Your To-Dos Like A BossFeb 28, 2021
Today, I want to talk about your to-do list. Now don’t exit out just because we’re going to talk about more things that you’ve got to do, but I promise you, if you hang with me, I’m going to make your life a hell of a lot easier and help you check some of those to do’s off of your list for good.
I’m going to get into the four steps to tackling your to-dos like a boss. I felt like a to-do list was something that I had to talk about. I feel like as moms, we tend to make ourselves do so much more than we have to.
So I know a lot of you probably wake up every day and brain dump all the things that you have to do for the day and just start ticking off those to-dos one at a time until you finally get up and realize, Oh my God, I forgot to eat lunch. Or wow. Where did the day go? It’s already five o’clock and your hubby’s walking through the door and wondering why dinner’s not on the stove.
Well, or he’s bringing in pizza because he knows that you’re probably not cooking for them tonight. Because he knows how busy you are with your to-dos. Now I feel like that puts us into a very reactive state, right? If you’re anything like me, you don’t want to be run by your to-do list.
It can be overwhelming. And a lot of times our to-do list is actually things that we really don’t need to be doing. It’s not having us stay in our lane and it’s not having an impact and give back in the way that we should be. It’s not allowing us to reach our full potential and give our entire selves to the world.
It’s just things that distract us and add more to our plate that really should not deserve any of our attention for the most part. So, what we’re going to do today is I’m going to give you the four steps to tackling your to-do list. Then we’re going to figure out how to eliminate the things in your life, moving forward that you should not be focusing on.
So you can make a lot more room on your plate so that you can show up intentionally and create space for the things that really matter and move the needle in your life the most. Okay. So let’s start by talking about what you should do first. Now, I know I said most people, brain dump, but some people don’t.
So first thing in the morning, just brain dump, everything that you can think of, that you have to do. Spend a couple of minutes doing this, just do it while you’re journaling, or just grab a pen and paper, sit down, and brain dump all your things. It could be something that you’ve been putting off for awhile.
It could be something like doing the dishes, taking your kids to school, doing laundry. It could be checking your email, hiring a new employee. Okay. Anything that you’ve got to do for the day, maybe it’s booking a flight somewhere or, you know, finding new accommodation or calling your mom. All right. Brain dump.
Everything you’ve got to do. And then after that, what I want you to do is highlight or circle three items that you absolutely have to get done. They’re pretty much a no brainer. Right. And that could be like kicking, picking your kids up from school or, you know, going grocery shopping, like right. Things that you absolutely need to get done.
Okay. And then from there now, this is where it gets powerful because you are not going to let your to-do list control your day any longer. So what you’re going to do is you’re going to pull up your calendar for the day and you’re going to find a block of time. That’s open and available. All you need is 30 to 45 minutes.
I want you to literally put this into your calendar block this time for your, to-do list. When things get scheduled, they get done. They get completed. I hope you’re loving the cruise right now. So time block, 30 to 45 minutes. And what you’re going to do, you guys, this is going to blow your mind.
You’re going to set a timer and you are going to bang out as many of these items on your to-do list, as you can, during that a lot of time. You’re not going to go over that time. You have 30 to 45 minutes, whatever you have time for that day. Right. And you’re going to bang out these to dues. Anything that doesn’t get done, move it to tomorrow, or just forget about it because maybe it wasn’t that important.
Right? Okay. So you’re going to brain dump, choose at least three things that you want to focus on. First, those are your priorities. Then you’re going to time block 30 to 45 minutes on your calendar to get these things done. You’re going to set a timer and you’re going to knock out as many of them as possible during that a lot of timeframe.
Okay. Sounds simple enough, right? I think you can handle that. So instead of us letting our whole day be wrapped up in our tutus, We’re being very intentional about the time that we spend doing them so that the remainder of our time can be spent upleveling ourselves and working on our businesses and on our lives instead of on our fricking to deuce.
Okay. They have a way of time sucking and just draining all of our energy. So we’re not going to let that happen anymore. And actually, I’m going to ask you to take this one step further. We are going to free up so much of your time right now because we’re going to create a, not to-do list. So I want you to make a list of everything that you do on a daily basis.
This can be in your life and your business, you know, grocery shopping, doing the dishes, taking the dog out for a walk, making dinner, making lunches, making breakfast, all of the things, right. Everything that you do every single day. And then we’re going to take a hard look at that list. I guarantee you, you can knock out some of those things that you’re doing every single day immediately, right?
From the start. Okay. As a freedom maker, we’re trying to free up some of your time, because time is precious. It’s something that you can’t get back. So sometimes you’re going to be able to eliminate these items, just completely cross them off of the things that you need to do. Maybe you’ll realize that it’s kind of.
Silly to check email multiple times a day, if that’s not necessary, right. That could be eliminated. There’s going to be other things that you can automate say, grocery shopping, right? There’s definitely delivery services for that, that are going to save you an hour, two, maybe three hours every single week that you can focus on different things.
Or maybe you just pick up those groceries, right. You order them ahead of time and then just do the curbside pickup. Usually, that’s free. Right. So be resourceful here, guys, figure out how to eliminate things, figure out how to automate things. And then other things can be delegated. You have little kids give them a treat for putting the groceries away or for doing the laundry, helping with the dishes, you know, delegate things as often as you can, but. Really guys, the purpose of this is so that you can free up some of your time to focus on the things that are more important to you. Our to-do list does not have to control our lives.
They don’t have to consume all of our time. And especially when say household cleaner costs say $50 an hour, you should learn to cut a check, to move faster, pay people to help you do things that you don’t want to spend time doing. Think about that three hours that you’d spend cleaning on a Saturday afternoon.
What if instead of doing that, you could take your family to the beach or spend a day at the park with them, maybe go on a walk, take a hike. All right. That time that you guys spend cleaning the house together, it could be spent making memories somewhere. So spend the $50 hire a cleaning lady, have her free up your time.
Right? Buy back your time. You guys, because time is precious. So what did we go over? Okay. We went over time, blocking 30 to 45 minutes on your calendar each day and setting a timer to bang out as much as possible, delegating, automating, eliminating things that don’t move the needle that you should not be focusing your time on.
And with all of this, I’m not saying just free up your time, so you can do nothing with it. We want to be very productive in the time that we’ve given ourselves back or spend it in a way that’s meaningful for us. So you guys that is the four steps to tackling your to-do list. Like a boss. I hope this episode helps, and I hope that you start implementing everything that you learned here on a daily basis.
I’ll catch you guys in the next episode.
