060: Ditch Being Self Employed, Without Dropping The Ball

May 16, 2021

Freedom Makers in the previous episode we want to find your zone of impact. Now we're on step two, which is how to stay in your zone of impact every single day. Now not only is finding your zone of impact crucially important, but learning how to show up every day and stay in it, and actually move the needle is even more important, because if you don't do this. A lot of times as entrepreneurs we were way too many hats in our business, and don't actually show up in our zone of impact powerfully because our energy is too far spent, after doing all of these other items so what we're going to do today is an exercise that's going to help you figure out how to actually get rid of things that are out of your zone of impact. Okay. And then step number three, that's going to be the next episode is saying no to the rest without dropping. So today, let's dive in.

All right, so I hope that you guys have this worksheet in front of you grab a pen and paper and it's going to be really helpful to take notes during this time as I really want you guys to be able to actually find your zone of impact. Okay, so what I want you to do is a document for a day or two, all of the things that you do from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. Right, I know. Yes, but I want you to even document the small tasks right you don't think matter because most often the most mundane things are what we have to eliminate first.

Alright, so now, if you guys are with me on the worksheet you see what I'm talking about but if you don't, I'm going to give you a representation of what you should put on your paper in front of you so I want you to draw four squares, connected to each other so we're gonna have a box in the right-left and bottom right and bottom left. Okay. And then I want you to write in the top left, this stuff, lights me up and I'm good at it. Then on the top right, this stuff lights me up and I'm not good at it, bottom left, I could do with that this but I'm good at it, bottom right, I could do without this and I'm not good at it. So the purpose of this is we're going to take the list of things that you do throughout the day, or if you want to just brainstorm your typical day right now that's fine. And I want you to categorize everything that you're doing into these boxes.

All right. And the reason we're doing this, it's all going to come together. And then after this, what we're going to do is learn how to say no to the rest without dropping the ball so that's meaning, what do we automate, what do we delegate, what do we eliminate first as an entrepreneur that's a question that I get all the time. And so this worksheet is going to help you actually figure that out and then I'm going to give you some tips and tricks to actually help you stay in your zone of impact today, so that hopefully we can continue showing up in our businesses, the way that we're meant to move the needle the most, so you should have right now, a list of some of the things that you do and if you don't feel free to hit that pause button and brain dump your typical day and your typical routine and all of the things that you're doing.

And I want you to categorize them into those, those four boxes, so for me, I used the example of graphic design before, so I would say that for me that falls into the category of this stuff lights me up and I'm good at it. I enjoy doing graphic design work so I'm going to put that in the top left-hand corner of my grid. And now further than that if I continue on. I'll put podcasting would also go on my upper left-hand side, but now let's think of something that we're going to put in the fourth box, I could do without this and I'm not good at it.

Okay, so I would say something that I could add that I can do without and I'm not good at, I would say scheduling things, or getting myself onto different platforms, I'm not good at it, and I could do without it I don't really enjoy doing that so I would put outreach for stages or podcasting outreach down in my inbox number four, and you guys you can number your boxes so I want you to go vertically, one for this stuff lights me up I'm good on it to four I could do without this but I'm good at it three for this stuff lights me up and I'm not good at it for four I can do that without this and I'm not good at it.

The reason we're numbering these is it's going to come into play and step number three, but take a few moments now guys and write down the things that you're doing and categorize them into these boxes. Okay, so let's say you're showing up and you need to do YouTube videos. Okay so you can put filming YouTube videos in one of your boxes, but then maybe you need to put editing YouTube videos in a different box maybe editing YouTube videos is something that you could do without, and you're not good at, so put that in number four.

All right now goes through everything that you're doing on a daily basis and continue categorizing, I'll give you a moment to hit the pause.

Now, from there we're going to go into step number three. Alright, so I hope that you paused me and took a second to fill out the rest of this chart. Now, Step number three is saying no to the rest without actually dropping the ball and you guys this is where the rubber meets the road, you are thinking of anything that comes between you and your zone of impact as a distraction and dealing with it accordingly. Instead of letting it take hold of you in rerouting your entire day, like whose day here is consumed by their to-do list rather than you actually showing up where you need to in your business.

So I want you to think about this, you should have a clear understanding of how to do something, the way that you want it done so that you can keep an eye on things. But you shouldn't take the time to actually implement the how. And that's we're saying no comes in.

This next exercise is going to help you know what to automate delegate and eliminate first. All right, it's true, remove any confusion of what you shouldn't be doing, it's going to help you stay in your zone of impact every single day. So, circling back to the boxes that we filled in before. I want you to start with Box number four. And this is the box that is, I could do without this and I'm not good at it. These are the items that we want to automate delegate and eliminate first. So, what we have below is a chart. Okay, it's basically just lined, and I want you to fill in on each line, a different activity from Box number four, to that activity. If it's an audit, if it's to be automated, you're going to put an ad next to it. In any activity labeled with an A, is something that could be automated, meaning there's a way to completely remove yourself from reaching the desired result of an activity. So you can start implementing the automation towards the top of this list first.

Okay, so I want you to go down and brain dump all of the items that were on Box number four, I could do without this and I'm not good at it. And you're going to brain dump them onto this sheet. Right. Okay. Now, you're going to look at this list, we just went through automate.

Now let's delegate and eliminate this waste from Box number four. Delegation is, the less you enjoy doing the item, you should focus on creating a process that somebody else can follow. So we're gonna need to do is document what you're doing currently for this process for anything labeled with a D. And the next step will be to actually find somebody to offload this work, too. Alright so delegating, is you following your exact processes, documenting them, and then finding somebody to replace you. When it comes to actually implement the hell.

Okay, now for eliminating these items, any items marked with an e should just be eliminated completely from your daily activities because they're just simply not important. Okay, so what you have done up to this point, feel free to hit the pause if you need to. If you've taken items from Box number four, that I could do without this and I'm not good at it, and you're putting them into a chart, and you're marking them with a D or an E, and then you're figuring out how to automate delegate eliminate the items from Box number four now.

Now, the next step is going to be delegating, eliminating, and automating items from Box number three, followed by ox box number two, followed by box, number one, assuming box number one has things that are outside of your zone of impact. Okay, so for me that graphic design example once again is something that is outside of my zone of impact, but it's one of the last things that I would delegate because it lights me up I do find it enjoyable and I'm good at it.

Okay. So look at your charts in this way, and it's going to help you understand what you need to offload first and it's going to make it very straightforward. What you're doing that should just be eliminating and what, what you could create systems and build out processes for and automate so that it frees up more of your time.
